About Kirtan
Kirtan originated in the 15th century in India, where devotees sang praises and fell into ecstatic states of bliss.
In this day kirtan is said to be most direct path to liberation. Through chanting we gain deep concentration and purify the space in and around us. The beautiful thing about kirtan is that you are as important in creating the music as the musicians leading the kirtan. Every person’s presence is so important in raising the energy of the music and igniting fire of ecstatic bliss. Swami Rama writes, "Among the Vedas, the most ancient scriptures in the library of man, the Sama Veda is devoted to the art of music. How fortunate is he or she who loves to sing or play an instrument!…Among the different forms of music, singing is the first and most powerful." Ammachi a great saint from India says “The Kali Yuga is full of (disharmonic) sounds, chanting is more effective than meditation to gain concentration. Chanting, concentration, meditation – this is the progression.”
Through chanting we awaken the true knowledge and inner light in ourselves and merge with the divine. We experience the bliss of our true self by letting the mind expand in the sound of sacred chanting. Through this each one of us can enjoy the peace born of our true nature. When we chant we open to pure love, and through pure love we bring peace to the world and to all beings everywhere.
